Greater Manchester diesel scam van seized and arrests

A hired van believed to be at the centre of a diesel theft scam in Greater Manchester has been intercepted by police.

Since Tuesday eight incidents have been reported where offenders have filled up a container inside the the van with diesel and driven off without paying.

The van was stopped following a sighting in Stalybridge and its contents seized.

Two men have been arrested and granted police bail until 3 May.

Rising prices

Police believe the van may have had its number plates changed after each theft.

Det Con Martin Gregory said: "The task to stop the van was not straightforward as officers from the intercept team needed to ensure this took place as safely as possible due to the large amount of fuel in the back."

According to AA figures the UK has the second highest diesel price in Europe.

Average UK petrol and diesel prices have risen by up to 5p a litre in the past month as a result of rising oil prices, following unrest in Africa and the Middle East.
