More than 40 firefighters are tackling a blaze at a disused school in Greater Manchester.

Fire spread through the three-storey Victorian building in Sawley Road, Miles Platting, at about 0500 GMT.

The fire service said crews would remain at the site after the blaze was put out to work with contractors to try to make the roof safe.

A spokesman said that there was no danger to nearby buildings, but smoke had clouded over Oldham Road.

The school, which had more recently been used as a community centre, was in the process of being demolished.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire.
