Heinz workers in Greater Manchester walk out on strike

Workers at Heinz in Greater Manchester have walked out on a 24-hour strike after rejecting a revised pay offer.

Unite union members at the Kitt Green factory in Wigan voted by three to one to turn down a 3.5% rise this year.

Heinz's offer also included a 3.4% rise in 2012 and a £200 bonus, but the union said the deal fell short of the rising cost of living.

Unite said a series of strikes held by its members last year cost the firm about £3m.

Heinz and Unite have agreed to enter into a conciliation process through Acas to resolve the dispute.
