The 25-year-old was confronted by a man carrying a handgun at his home in Claremont Road, Moss Side at about 0200 GMT on Wednesday.
The gunman ordered the student to put his hands up and go into a bedroom before stealing three laptops and a wallet.
The robber was described as black, 23 to 28, 5ft 10in (1.8m), and of medium build. He was wearing dark clothes.
He also had a hood up and his face covered.
Det Con Darren Evans, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We are determined to catch the person responsible for this robbery - we want to see them brought to justice and have that firearm taken off the streets so it can't frighten or injure anyone else.
