Properties across Bury town centre are without power following a fire at an electricity sub-station.

Greater Manchester Police have closed Bolton Street following the fire outside the Castle Leisure Centre.

Some buildings on the street were evacuated while crews, including a foam unit, contained the fire.

Seventy-two properties which are still without electricity are not expected to be reconnected until about 2000 GMT, North West Electricity said.

The power company said 670 properties were initially affected when the fire broke out.

A spokesman said engineers were waiting on site and hoped to get power back to the remaining properties as soon as possible.
