Elderly woman beats off burglars with stick in Oldham

An 83-year-old pensioner used her walking stick to beat off two burglars who posed as gas engineers to enter her Oldham home.

The partially sighted woman became suspicious of one who went down her cellar and she shoved him back up the stairs with her stick.

She beat the second man and tore his clothing, after finding him in a bedroom of her Abbey Hills Road home.

The burglars made off with cash at about 1430 GMT on Wednesday.

'Ripped clothing'

Pc Jenna Linaker said: "This was a horrific experience for the victim, who was targeted by two men who took advantage of her vulnerabilities.

"When she became suspicious she put up a fight and luckily the pair eventually left.

"We would appeal to anyone who may have seen men matching this description in the area at the time. Someone may remember seeing the second suspect with his clothing ripped."

Both men were described as white, aged in their 30s. The first was about 5ft tall, of slim build with dark hair and was wearing denim jeans and a dark top.

His accomplice was of a broader build, in his 30s, and wearing dark clothing.
