Abduction attempt on seven-year-old girl in playground

A woman tried to abduct a seven-year-old girl from a playground in Oldham, police said.

Officers said the woman offered the girl sweets as she played outside with friends at the school on Sam Road on Wednesday lunchtime.

When the girl refused the sweets, the woman grabbed her arm and pulled her towards her, but one of the girl's friends managed to pull her back.

Greater Manchester Police said officers have been on patrol by the school.

The force is urging parents to remind their children not to speak to strangers.

'Very concerning'

Police said the woman got into a blue car after the incident, but she is thought to have hit a wall as she parked outside the school so it could be damaged.

Det Insp Javid Pervaiz from Oldham CID said: "This is obviously a very concerning incident and all parents at the school have been informed about it.

"The little girl did exactly what she should have in that she declined the offer of sweets and fortunately her friend was quick to react when the woman grabbed her arm."

He added: "I want to reassure parents that incidents like this are extremely rare and we are taking it very seriously.

"Police patrols have been stepped up in the area and I would encourage parents to reaffirm safety advice with their children and remind them not to speak to strangers."
