Part of the M56 is to be closed for three weekends instead of two while work to replace a bridge is carried out.

The 39-year-old Bowdon View Bridge, which links the M56 and the A556, is being pulled down and replaced.

The motorway was closed westbound from junction six (Hale Barns) to eight (Bowdon) and eastbound from junction nine (M6) to six on the weekend.

It will now close between 22 and 25 October and 29 October and 1 November.

The closures will be from 2200 BST on Friday until 0500 BST on Monday.

Matt Sweeting from The Highways Agency said work to demolish the existing bridge was going to take slightly longer than planned.

The new 1,830 tonne bridge, which has been constructed alongside the motorway, will then be manoeuvred into place.

All diversions will be clearly signposted, the Highways Agency said.
