Victim mowed down by car outside Urmston pub
A 23-year-old man has been jailed after he mowed down a man in his car, leaving him seriously hurt.
James Blundell, of Urmston, deliberately hit the man at speed outside the Tim Bobbin Pub near his home in Flixton Road in September 2009.
Minshull Street Crown Court heard his victim was left needing extensive surgery for a split bowel and has lost his job, home and car.
Blundell was jailed for 15 months. He admitted assault and dangerous driving.
The court heard details of how Blundell got into his car and drove it towards the pub, mounting the pavement while shouting abuse at doormen.
The victim's wife and another woman began remonstrating with Blundell. He then began to shout abuse at them, so the victim confronted his attacker, who was still in his car.
Blundell drove past the victim, who was stood at the side of the road, then reversed at speed hitting him with the front off-side wing of the Ford Mondeo car.
The victim got up and went home with his wife but a few hours later he became very ill and was taken to hospital.
He remained in hospital for 19 days and underwent a five-hour operation.
Det Con Rachel Ostick said: "The victim was simply standing up to Blundell who was shouting abuse to a number of people that night, but as a result received nasty injuries and caused further problems for an existing back complaint.
"While today's result cannot give the victim his old life back, I hope it gives him some comfort to know Blundell is behind bars."
