Thousands of homes were left without water and four schools closed after a water main burst in Greater Manchester.

The pipe burst in Ladybridge Road, Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, early on Tuesday.

A United Utilities spokeswoman said engineers had worked on the burst thoughout the day and the pipe was repaired by 1800 BST.

Lane End Primary, Orrishmere Primary, Bradshaw Hall Primary and Oak Grove Special School were closed.

However, Lane End Primary was able to reopen on Tuesday afternoon, Stockport Council said.

United Utilities redirected water from other mains in the area during the day, and also used water tankers to pump clean water into the mains.

Some homes were without water throughout the day and were given bottled water.
