Murder probe after boy dies following Catford park 'incident'

Police have started a murder investigation after a five-year-old boy suffered critical injuries in a south-east London park.

Scotland Yard said the boy was taken to hospital with head injuries following an "incident involving a man" in Mountsfield Park, Catford, on Sunday.

The child died on Tuesday. Post-mortem tests took place on Thursday.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on Monday and subsequently charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was remanded in custody and is due to next appear at Woolwich Crown Court on 20 December.

Det Ch Insp Tony Lynes said the force was appealing to find any witnesses who were in, or near to, Mountsfield Park, between 5.15 and 6.45 GMT on Sunday".

"[We are] keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything regarding an incident involving a man in the company of a child," he said.
