Zdenek Makar: Appeal over killed man raises £10k

An appeal to raise funds to send home the body of a Czech man killed in east London last week has exceeded its £10,000 target.

Friends of Zdenek Makar set up the appeal on the gofundme website on Saturday.

Mr Makar, 31 died from head injuries near All Saints DLR station in Poplar on Wednesday night.

A 29-year-old man was charged with murder on Sunday and was due to appear before Thames magistrates.

Mirka Balekova, one of Mr Makar's friends who helped to set up the appeal, wrote: "We can't even find the right words to thank to all the people who donated.

"We're overwhelmed with all your kindness and generosity."

Friends also left tributes on a memorial page for Mr Makar set up on facebook.

A memorial service for Mr Makar will be held at Poplar Catholic church on 1 October.
