A 94-year-old woman has died after falling backwards on an escalator in a Marks and Spencer store.

The elderly woman is believed to have lost her balance at the top of the steps in the south London branch at about 15:30 GMT on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the Sutton High Street branch. The company said it was a "tragic accident".

Paramedics arrived six minutes later, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Marks and Spencer spokesman said: "We responded immediately by calling the emergency services and attending to the customer's immediate needs."

The London Ambulance Service said: "Sadly, despite the extensive efforts of our crew, a woman died at the scene."
