Man arrested following east London cyclist death

A man has been arrested after a cyclist died when he was hit by a car that failed to stop in east London.

The 32-year-old man was struck at the junction of Commercial Road and Cavell Street in Whitechapel shortly after 22:00 GMT on Monday.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

He has been bailed until mid-January.

The man arrested was the driver of the car that failed to stop at the scene, police said.

A driver of another car, who witnessed the collision, has provided a detailed statement to police.

The cyclist has not been named but his next of kin have been informed.

A post-mortem examination will take place on Thursday at Poplar mortuary, in east London.

The Metropolitan Police are examining CCTV footage and appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
