Man arrested over assaults on two pensioners in Newham

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after two elderly people were punched in the face in apparently "unprovoked attacks", Metropolitan Police said.

A 75-year-old woman travelling on her mobility scooter was repeatedly punched in the face in Grangewood Street, Newham, before midday on 16 May.

On 20 June, a 71-year-old man was punched and kicked in the face on the same road at about 08:20 BST.

The arrested man is being held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

In the first attack the woman suffered a broken jaw. A man, 37, was arrested days later on suspicion of suspicion of actual bodily harm. He has been bailed to return next month.

The second victim was taken to hospital following the assault on Friday where he received treatment for severe bruising and lacerations to his face.
