Parents admit baby's rickets death

The parents of a five-month-old boy who died from acute rickets have admitted his manslaughter.

Nkosiyapha Kunene, 36, of Erith, south-east London, appeared at the Old Bailey accused of killing Ndingeko Kunene on 14 June 2012.

His wife, Virginia Kunene, 32, admitted the same offence at an earlier hearing.

The Zimbabwe-born couple will be sentenced on 28 February. The judge, Mr Justice Singh, told them he was "considering all options".

"The seriousness of the offence of which the life of a baby is lost will be apparent to everyone so I must bear that in mind."

Both defendants were granted conditional bail.

Rickets is a bone condition caused by a deficiency of vitamin D and can be brought on by a poor diet.
