A man has appeared in court charged over the death of a police officer who was hit by a car he was trying to stop.

PC Andrew Duncan, 47, of East Molesey in Surrey, was checking vehicle speeds in Sutton, south London, when a car struck him on Friday.

The father of two died in hospital from his injuries on Sunday.

Gary Cody, 25, from South Norwood, was remanded into custody by South Western Magistrates' Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Cody - who was charged under the name Gary Bromige - is also accused of failing to stop at the scene of the accident at the junction of Reigate Avenue and Rose Hill, failing to report an accident and driving without insurance.

Two men aged 19 and 20 who were arrested on Sunday in connection with the investigation remain in custody at a south London police station.

A woman arrested on Saturday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice has been released on police bail.
