London Fire Brigade says electric heaters cause fire-a-day

Electric heaters are responsible for a fire a day in London, the city's fire brigade has warned.

London Fire Brigade said over the last four winters there have been 310 fires caused by electric heaters, leading to 10 deaths and 57 injuries.

The spokesman said portable electric heaters were "disproportionally" likely to cause fatal fires.

Early indications are that the death of a man in Fulham last week was caused by a heater setting fire to nearby items.

Group manager Tom George said: "What we're seeing is people sitting too close to them, people putting clothes on them to dry them out and they're falling over quite easily and setting things on fire."

The brigade is warning people to ensure portable heaters are standing upright and to keep them well away from clothes and furniture.
