One of London's busiest roads is set to remain closed overnight after a crash which has left a motorcyclist in a critical condition in hospital.

The victim, believed to be in his 60s, was seriously injured on the London-bound carriageway of the A40 Westway in White City at 06:15 BST on Thursday.

Police said nobody else was hurt in the crash and appealed for witnesses.

Repairs to the flyover, near the Westfield centre, have begun and it is hoped the road will reopen on Friday.

An "expansion joint failure" had been identified, Transport for London said.

"Engineers are currently on site making repairs and conducting additional safety checks on similar expansion joints," it added in a statement.

Diversions are in place using the slip roads and the Northern Roundabout which run underneath the A40, at part of its junction with the A3220 West Cross Route and the A219 Wood Lane.

However, drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
