Fifty offered shelter after Deptford tower block fire

Fifty people are being offered shelter in a community centre in south London after a fire in a 17-storey tower block.

Three adults and two children were rescued from the Mermaid Tower in Abinger Grove, Deptford, and a seventh-floor flat was damaged.

Emergency crews had to wear breathing equipment to lead them to safety.

London Fire Brigade says it took 50 firefighters an hour to bring the blaze under control on Sunday afternoon.

A boy aged seven and a girl aged 13 were among the five rescued people who needed hospital treatment for the effects of smoke.
