Hither Green cinema campaign gathers momentum

A campaign to save an old picture house has been launched in south London.

Although the Park Cinema in Hither Green, near Lewisham, went dark in 1957, it was used as a nursery until two years ago.

Now the Art Deco building is due to go to auction and could be converted into a block of flats.

Campaigners came together this week at an outdoor screening on the site. They want to raise funds to preserve the cinema as an arts and community centre, something they say the area desperately lacks.
