New fund to boost Bermondsey Square community

Cash grants are being offered to groups who come up with ideas to improve a south London community.

Occupiers and owners of Bermondsey Square are putting up the money to back schemes that will improve the lives of people living in the area.

Organisers said ideas can range from buying a football strip for the local youth team to putting on a memorable event in the square.

Grants will range from £250 to £1,000 and be awarded three times a year.

Health and fitness

A public meeting at the Shortwave Cinema will coincide with the launch of the Bermondsey Square Community Fund on Tuesday.

Applicants will be encouraged to submit ideas that include promoting health and fitness, improving the environment, sustainability, the historical and cultural heritage of the area, education, art and design or a one-off event.

Chris Brown, from the developers of Bermondsey Square, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the people in the community to help enhance and create the best for their neighbourhood".

Applications for the first phase of awards must be submitted by 28 February.
