A 50-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the death of a woman who was dragged for a mile after being hit by a driver who did not stop.

The woman, thought to have been in her early 20s, was struck in the Haverstock Hill area, near Belsize Park Tube station, at about 0155 BST on Thursday.

It is believed she was hit in front of the Royal Free Hospital.

Officers said it was possible the driver may not have known that someone had been struck.

Police believe they know the identity of the woman but have yet to inform all her family.

The cause of death has been given as multiple injuries and detectives have recovered a vehicle which is being examined by police.

The arrested man remains in custody at a north London police station.

Haverstock Hill and Belsize Park Tube station were closed for much of Thursday to allow for forensic investigations.
