The bodies of two women have been found in a flat in Putney, south-west London.

Emergency services were called to the second-floor flat in Norman Court in Lower Richmond Road at 1040 BST.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were called to the scene over fears of a chemical spill and residents were asked to stay indoors.

The road was closed for most of the day causing lengthy traffic delays in the area. Emergency crews remain at the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the deaths were not being treated as suspicious "at this stage" and no arrests had been made.

Christina Barrett, who lives in a neighbouring house, said she saw a "decontamination unit" and emergency services crew "being hosed down".

"There was a smell in the air that caught the back of your throat," she added.

"It's a bit shaking. Other people in neighbouring flats could be affected."
