Child 'fell 15 floors to death' in Tower Hamlets

An eight-year-old girl died after apparently falling from a 15th floor window at a block of flats.

Police were called at about 1440 BST on Saturday to Sandall House in Tower Hamlets, east London.

A passer-by saw the girl lying injured on the pavement and dialled 999. The child was treated at the scene and taken to hospital by air ambulance.

She was pronounced dead about an hour later. Police are treating it as an unexplained death.

There have been no arrests and the girl's next of kin have been informed, Metropolitan Police said.

'Rest in peace'

Flowers and tributes have been left at the scene.

One card read: "Rest in peace Leanne."

The child, who has not been officially identified by police, is believed to have fallen about 120 ft (36.5m).

The building is 20 storeys high.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a fall from height on Daling Way.

"We sent one ambulance crew, a single responder in a car, a duty officer and the air ambulance to the scene.

"Our staff treated one patient - a young girl - who was taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital."
