French fatal crash couple named as Richard and Dr Mary Lucas

A British couple killed in a car crash in France have been named as Richard and Dr Mary Lucas from Lincoln.

The couple, aged 85 and 83, died when their car ended up in a river in the Dordogne region on Friday.

It is understood the couple had a holiday home in France. The French authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

Mr Lucas had previously been a councillor and was a former president of the Lincoln Civic Trust.

Ric Metcalfe, the leader of Lincoln City Council, said he was very sad to hear of his death.

"He has been a big figure in Lincoln for many, many years," he said.

"He has taken a huge interest in public life and was a lively and very special sort of person."

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "Our staff are providing assistance to the family of a British couple who sadly died in a car crash in France."
