An investigation has been launched amid claims a footballer was racially abused by a fan during a game.

Worcester City defender Wayne Thomas was allegedly targeted by a home supporter during his team's away fixture at Boston United on Saturday.

Play was stopped and the referee spoke to both managers and captains at the Jakemans Stadium.

A spokesman for Boston United said: "Anyone found guilty will be punished to the maximum."

Boston manager Dennis Greene said the incident was "unacceptable".

"Things like that shouldn't happen," he said.

"It's ridiculous, racial abuse shouldn't come in to football anymore.

"That's going back to the 80s, we've moved on a long a long way from that."

The teams went on to a 1-1 draw in the National League North game.
