A JCB was driven into a cash machine in a botched robbery bid and a police car was damaged and officers driven at as the raiders tried to escape.

Police said the JCB was smashed into the front of the Co-Operative store on Jerusalem Road in the Lincolnshire village of Skellingthorpe.

No police officers were injured in the incident, which happened in the early hours.

Three or four raiders are now being searched for by police.

No arrests have been made and the force is appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

Resident James Kirby said police responded to the store alarm quickly, disturbing the culprits.

"It was pretty chaotic," he said.

Mr Kirby added: "I spoke to one of the officers, he tells me one of the gang members in one of the vehicles tried to ram... did ram the police vehicles and nearly ran over one of the officers."

Another witness reported seeing a police car in pursuit of a 4x4, which was then rammed by a car, possibly an Audi.
