Motorists will be slowed to 40mph when work starts on the A46 Lincoln bypass in June.
Lincolnshire County Council said work to dual the road may take up to 14 months.
The £10m project is on a stretch between Doddington Road roundabout, which will be expanded, and Whisby Road junction.
The 40mph limit will be in place on the road during the works, although two-way traffic will remain at all times.
A signed diversion will be in place during a temporary closure of a section of Whisby Road.
