Leicestershire storm: Roads closed after heavy rain

Roads across Leicestershire have been closed due to flooding after a severe storm hit the county overnight.

The Environment Agency said roads, including the A6006 at Asfordby near Melton Mowbray, were badly affected by high water levels.

Residents are being advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Leicestershire Police said it had "a busy night" dealing with the impact of heavy rain and high winds in the county.

Campsite flooding

Roads affected by flooding included the A6 at Hathern, Leicester Road in Sharnford, Slash Lane in Sileby, Kingfisher Estate in Loughborough and Leicester Road in Enderby.

The owners of a campsite at Oaks, in Charnwood, near Loughborough, said they spent the night dealing with flooding at the site.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "Some areas are very treacherous at the moment so we would advise the public to be very careful.

"There is a lot of surface water on the roads and... it is not a good idea to be on the roads unless it is absolutely necessary."
