Cash boost to improve Leicester bus services

A scheme to improve bus services and reduce congestion on a route into Leicester has been given a cash boost.

The £2.5m government funding has been awarded jointly to Leicestershire County and Leicester City councils.

Improvements will be made to the A426 with the cash from Better Bus Area Fund.

Plans include new bus lanes and junction improvements being installed on the stretch between Blaby and the city centre, via Aylestone.

A smart ticketing scheme will also be introduced along the route with improvements made to bus stops.

Lesley Pendleton, county council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "This route is heavily congested at peak time and, as a result, bus services can be affected.

"These measures will help reduce journey times and improve congestion on this key route into Leicester."
