A woman was assaulted and her two young children threatened during a burglary at her Leicestershire home.

A gang of four men broke into the victim's house, in the Westfield Lane area of Rothley, at about 2100 GMT on Monday.

Once inside the property the men threatened the 39-year-old woman and her two children and demanded cash.

When she told them she did not have any she was assaulted. They then searched the house and stole cash and jewellery.

'Extremely upsetting'

The woman was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment to a head injury.

The offenders have been described as being of average build and wore balaclavas and dark clothes.

Det Con Kerry Deadman, of Leicestershire Police, said: "Thankfully the victim was not seriously injured and has since been discharged from hospital.

"Though the ordeal is not something that she or her children will easily forget, the events of that night were extremely upsetting for them.

"We have spoken to people in the area but we are still looking for more information that will lead us to those men. I am appealing to anyone who thinks they know who was responsible to call us immediately."
