Fatal accident leads to M1 rush hour congestion

A man has died in a four-vehicle crash in Leicestershire which led to the closure of the M1 southbound for about eight hours.

The Land Rover driver, believed to be in his 20s, was fatally injured in the collision near junction 21 at about 0545 GMT on Monday.

No-one else was hurt in the crash, which also involved a Ford Transit van, a Honda Civic and a Volkswagen Golf.

Police closed the carriageway of the motorway until about 1430 GMT.

Det Con Peter Davies thanked motorists for their patience while officers dealt with the incident.

He added: "I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the Land Rover Freelander vehicle being driven beforehand to contact us, if they haven't already done so.

"Any information no matter how insignificant it may seem could help with our investigation."
