A Leicestershire council's new £5.6m headquarters will open in June 2011, three years after the previous building was severely damaged by fire.

Melton Borough Council's offices in Nottingham Road were gutted by the electrical blaze in May 2008.

The building was repaired and reopened but the authority later decided to move to a new site off Burton Street.

The council will share the new headquarters with the county council and Probation Service.

Council leader Malise Graham said: "This is a £5.6m construction project and has provided a significant injection of economic activity into the local area and is fully funded from the council's insurance settlement following the fire at the old offices and contributions from partners who will share the building.

"The building itself will provide an investment for the future and enable services to be economically, effectively and efficiently delivered for the people of Melton Borough from a town centre location.

"The location will also encourage visitors and bolster our town centre economy during these difficult times."
