About 50 jobs are being cut at an office supply business in Leicester.

Office Depot has announced plans to close its site on Scudamore Road, which employs 185 staff.

Some posts will be transferred to its other Leicester site while the firm is in negotiations to transfer a further 80 to a third-party business.

The company has announced a total of 170 redundancies spread across all its operational areas, including 41 at its site in Andover, Hampshire.

As part of the proposals, the Edinburgh site, which currently employs 16 staff, has also been earmarked for closure.

Difficult trading conditions as a result of the global economic crisis has been blamed for the decision.

John Moore, from Office Depot, said: "Trading conditions remain challenging and whilst these proposals are partly in response to these conditions they form part of a wider three-year plan that was implemented in 2008 to reposition our business for future growth.

"Whilst these decisions are never easy, they must be taken to secure the future of our business and as one of the largest employers in the Leicestershire area we remain committed to investing in the local economy."
