Rail bridge closure in Leicester causes traffic delay

One lane of a Leicester bridge has been closed by Network Rail after sensors detected movement in the structure.

The closure of the bridge on Enderby Road, in Whetstone, caused traffic delays during the morning rush hour.

A Network Rail spokesman said work was under way to install pilings for a new bridge as part of a planned improvement programme.

Sensors indicated some movement in the old bridge so the structure will remain closed while an inspection takes place.

The sensors were installed on 22 September after cracks appeared in the bridge during the work.

Diversions will remain in place until the cause of the movement is found, the spokesman said.

The city council is being consulted to ensure the effect on city traffic is kept to a minimum.
