Matches cancelled due to sodden Kirklees pitches

Football and rugby matches due to be played on council pitches across the Kirklees area of West Yorkshire this weekend have been cancelled.

Kirklees Council officials said that rain falling on already saturated pitches had prompted their decision.

Officers said: "The pitches are saturated following continued incidents of heavy rain over the last week."

The council covers the Batley, Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Holmfirth areas of the county.

In a statement officers added: "With more rain forecast they are expected to remain in an unplayable condition."

Safety inspections are due to be carried out on the pitches to monitor ground conditions and "there will be extra effort made to prepare pitches for future fixtures", the council said.
