People are being warned not to approach a sex offender who has absconded from a mental health unit in west Yorkshire.

Elwin Cuffy was reported missing from Cygnet Hospital in Brierley Lane, Bradford on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the 49-year-old ran off while he was on a supervised visit with two carers and took a taxi to Copley Road in Doncaster.

Cuffy was convicted of a sex offence in 2011 and had been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

Supt Paul McCurry, from South Yorkshire Police said Cuffy was known to have arrived in Doncaster at about 16:55 GMT.

In an appeal to the public, he said: "If you see Mr Cuffy in and around the Copley area or you know where he is at this moment in time, I urge you do not approach him but contact 999 immediately.

"As a patient that is detained under the mental health act, it's appropriate that we recover him to get the appropriate treatment as a matter of urgency."

Cuffy is described as 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build, with dreadlocks.

He was last seen wearing a black and white T-shirt, black jacket, black jeans and white trainers.

On its website, Cygnet Hospital is described as providing "locked and low secure" services.
