Organisers of a restoration project have applied for a £1.3m grant to preserve a landmark venue in Bradford.

Bradford Council plans to restore the sandstone exterior of St George's Hall.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the council £79,000 to develop the project and earmarked the rest of the cash pending approval of detailed proposals.

It has hosted performances by Charles Dickens and such rock acts as Queen and David Bowie. An archive is also planned to celebrate the building's history.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, said: "St George's Hall was one of the first ever public buildings in Bradford City Centre and 160 years later, it's fantastic to be getting the investment it needs to maintain its position as a key heritage building and international venue."
