Police custody death man named by watchdog

A man who died in police custody has been named by a watchdog investigating his death.

Adam Rice, 46, was found dead in a cell at Elland Road police station in Leeds following his arrest the previous night.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police arrested him at Leeds General Infirmary for theft offences.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission launched an inquiry following his death on 12 May.

Investigators said Mr Rice was taken to the police station and put in a cell but when officers checked on him the following day, he was found unresponsive and pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing.
