A charity swim with about 300 participants has been postponed due to high winds and rain forecast this weekend.

The 2013 Yorkshire Swimming Festival at Pugneys Country Park, near Wakefield was called off due to the "extremely challenging" conditions expected.

Organisers of the event, in aid of the Jane Tomlinson appeal, said: "Sunday will effectively be a washout".

The rescheduled event will now take place in September.

It's the third year the event was due to be held in the lake at the park.

Sunday's swimmers were to tackle a 500m or 1500m open water swim, or a 1km swim followed by a 5km run as part of Swim for All.

The youngest swimmer registered is 12 years old.

The event was set up in memory of Jane Tomlinson from Rothwell, near Leeds who raised about £1.85m for charity during her lifetime.

She died at St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds in 2007, seven years after being diagnosed with cancer.
