Swan pedalo effort raises £40,000

A marathon effort pedalling a Swan-shaped pedalo the length of the Liverpool-Leeds canal has raised more than £40,000 for Sport Relief.

BBC Radio Leeds presenters Adam Pope and Katherine Hannah took part in 10-day voyage on Grace the Swan.

Mr Pope said: "We've been from Bootle to brutal" and the people of Yorkshire had been "amazing".

The Lord Mayor of Leeds has invited the pair to a civic reception because of the sum of money raised.

Their journey finished among large crowds at Granary Wharf in the centre of Leeds about 18:30 GMT with James Toseland, former World Superbike champion, waving the chequered flag.

Grace finished the journey with a large Yorkshire flag flying from the pedalo.

Ms Hannah said she was "absolutely stunned" by the number of people that had turned out to see the pair home.

The journey started in the middle of Liverpool on 14 March and covered the entire 127 miles (204km) of the canal

Those wishing to donate can do so at the Sport Relief web page.
