A man has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years for mugging an 89-year-old woman in a West Yorkshire street who later died.

Paul Halstead, 27, formerly of Shirley Parade, Gomersal, near Cleckheaton, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to manslaughter and robbery.

Jean Myers was robbed in Quarry Road, Gomersal, on 17 June and died later in hospital.

West Yorkshire Police said they were "pleased" with his sentence.

Det Ch Insp Simon Bottomley said: "We hope that is sends a clear message to people who may be involved in these types of robberies; that people can die and that ultimately, the police will catch up with you and put you before the courts."
