Pay-by-phone parking to be introduced across Kirklees

Pay-by-phone parking is likely to be introduced in Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Dewsbury.

The system allows people to pay for parking using a credit or debit card via a mobile phone.

Officials say pay and display machines would still remain for customers who preferred that option.

Kirklees Council will consider the scheme at a meeting on 8 November and if approved the system would be introduced in 2012.

Councils do not face additional costs from pay-by-phone schemes as the supplier of the system bears the operational costs.

Those costs are usually passed on to consumers through a small charge.

Pay-by-phone is already used in Leeds, Sheffield, York and Rotherham.
