A police officer was hurt in a motorway crash while pursuing a car suspected of involvement in a hit-and-run collision.

He had been following a silver Vauxhall Vectra suspected of being in an earlier collision with a Bentley on Alfred Street, Blackpool, at 16:50 BST.

The officer hit the central reservation and overturned as he tried to get the Vectra to stop on the M61 southbound near Bolton, Lancashire Police said.

His injuries are not thought to life-threatening, the force said.

The M61 southbound, near the Rivington services, was shut between junctions eight and six, as an investigation was carried out.
