A "serious" fire which left a disused Conservative club in danger of collapse is thought to have been the result of an arson attack.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at the five-storey building on Cannon Street, Accrington, which broke out shortly before 03:45 BST.

The blaze has been brought under control but has caused major structural damage, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said.

No-one was injured in the incident.

A spokesman said the fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

Det Insp Julie Cross of Lancashire Police said the precarious state of the building meant police and fire investigators were unable to enter the building.

She said: "Hopefully once it is made secure and safe we will be able to conduct our investigation."
