A 23-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl have died after being hit by a car in Preston.

Rachel Murphy and the teenager - who has not yet been named - were struck by the vehicle when they were walking in a group of five in Brockholes Brow.

As they crossed the road on Wednesday evening, three of them were hit by the city-centre bound BMW.

The family of Ms Murphy, who died at the scene, said she was "very happy-go-lucky" and popular with children.

An "avid football fanatic" who supported Liverpool, she "always took all the youngsters from her neighbourhood to play football at the local park".

They said Ms Murphy, the oldest of four children, was "a very polite, well-mannered girl who had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody".

The 17-year-old girl, who was from Preston, died in hospital after the incident, which happened at about 18:40 BST.

Another girl, aged 15, suffered a suspected broken leg and arm.

The driver of the BMW, a 21-year-old man from Blackburn, was treated for shock.

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
