Blackpool woman attacked with her own walking stick

A woman was hit over the head with her own walking stick before being dragged to the ground, struck again and kicked, police have said.

The 50-year-old told Lancashire Police she was attacked by an "unknown" woman as she walked through the centre of Blackpool at about 04:40 GMT on Sunday.

The attacker grabbed her walking stick as she reached the junction of Corporation Street and Church Street.

Her friend was kicked in the face as he tried to intervene and help.

She suffered cuts to her eyes and head in the assault, as well as bruising.

Police said the stick was hooked around the victim's neck to pull her to the floor as the attack progressed.

Det Con Jason Wainwright, of Blackpool CID, said: "This was a nasty attack on someone simply trying to enjoy a night out."
