Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson over a serious fire at a disused hotel on Blackpool promenade.

Emergency services received a call reporting suspicious activity at the Palm Beach Hotel, South Shore, near the Pleasure Beach, at about 01:30 BST.

Senior fire officer Dave Russell said the fire was now under control. No one was injured but he said nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Police said two Blackpool men aged 38 and 39 are being questioned.

Mr Russell said the fire spread through the ground floor, first floor and roof space.

He said about 30 people living in properties on Clifton Street behind the former hotel were moved as a precautionary measure.

The residents were taken to a rest centre at Palatine School.

Mr Russell said: "It wasn't that they were in danger because of the fire, it was because they were in the vicinity of smoke."
