Work on the construction of a £5m bus station in Lancashire has started.

Funding has been provided from the £40m Pennine Reach programme aimed at improving public transport between Blackburn and Accrington.

Ainsworth Street is closing to allow work to begin on the station which is being built on the site of the former market which has moved to the Mall.

The new station is due to be completed by January.

An interim bus station has been built in Ainsworth Street while the new one is being built.

As part of the Pennine Reach programme, which was approved by the government in October, Accrington will also get a new bus station and there will be dedicated bus lanes in east Lancashire.
